The garage doors are officially open: Second District Brewing, the latest venture from our friends at LPMG Companies, recently launched in the Newbold neighborhood of South Philly.

This new endeavor aligns with John Longacre’s 15 years of Newbold development to revive small batch manufacturing in South Philadelphia, alongside Ultimo, South Philadelphia Tap Room, Miss Rachel’s Pantry, and American Sardine Bar. Newbold was deemed the fourth “hottest” neighborhood in the Philadelphia area by Redfin.com, based on increase in property interest and value in the area. Point Breeze and Newbold home prices have appreciated 71.9% from 2010 to 2015.

The Back Story

Named after the neighborhood’s City Council District and housed in the former J&B Eastern Saw & Tool Sharpening shop, Second District is focused on intensely local, small batch brews from masterminds Curt Decker (of Nodding Head) and head brewer Ben Potts (of Tired Hands).

The Outcome

We worked with the team to develop a robust brand to fit the brewery that reflected the warehouse’s previous life as a saw and tool shop. Huy, (local master welder that the Vietnamese Coffee Stout is named after) created the wall mounted metal logo, custom railings, and bike mounts that hold up to the brand and space’s character.

The result? A brand that fits seamlessly with the space itself, which preserves many of the original signs and industrial elements from J&B.

Second District Brewing embodies the South Philly maker spirit and is truly creating something worth visiting in Point Breeze.

Our team recently got the chance to check out the brews and celebrate Second District’s opening, and we’re excited to see how the brewpub continues to build up the Newbold neighborhood. Congrats to John Longacre, Curt Decker, Ben Potts, and the team on a successful launch – we’ll be back for many more happy hours soon.
